Prakerja, UID, and SDSN SEA Convene with Prof. Jeffrey Sachs on Lifelong Learning and SDGs02 July 2024

Jakarta, Indonesia – June 29, 2024 – Prakerja, the Indonesian government's workforce development program, collaborated with the United In Diversity Foundation (UID) and The Sustainable Development Solutions Network Southeast Asia (SDSN SEA) to host a public seminar titled "Building a Sustainable Future Through Lifelong Learning and Skill Development." The event featured Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, a renowned economist from Columbia University and a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) champion.

Over 300 guests, including academics, researchers, entrepreneurs, development partners, NGO/CSO representatives, and government officials, gathered at the Djakarta Theater in Central Jakarta on Saturday, June 29th, 2024.

Investing in Skills for a Sustainable Future
Professor Boediono, former Vice President of Indonesia (2009-2014), emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and skill development for tackling global challenges and achieving the SDGs by 2030. He commended the Prakerja Card Program as a model initiative.

"The Prakerja Card Program is a valuable initiative that deserves continued support," said Prof. Boediono. "Rigorous evaluation and effective management are crucial for achieving its full potential."

Echoing this sentiment, Prof. Sachs stressed the importance of investing in human capital. "Developing people's skills is paramount," he stated, "and I applaud Prakerja for its achievements in this area."

Prakerja's Impact on SDGs
Research by CIPG-ADB (2023) highlights the positive contribution of Pre-Employment to eight of the 17 SDGs. By promoting lifelong learning opportunities, increasing access to better jobs, and fostering public-private partnerships, the program supports goals like Quality Education (SDG 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).

Professor Sachs further emphasized that Prakerja's value extends beyond soft skills development and lifelong learning. It provides financial aid and training access, ensuring free, high-quality skill enhancement for Indonesians.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
The seminar concluded with closing remarks from Denni Puspa Purbasari, PMO Prakerja Executive Director, and Tantowi Yahya, President of the United In Diversity Foundation.

"Through collaboration between government, businesses, and social/community organizations, we can work together for a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable Indonesia and the world," stated Ms. Purbasari. Prakerja hopes this event inspires a commitment to continuous skill development as a driver of sustainable development.

Mr. Yahya echoed the sentiment, expressing appreciation for Prakerja's efforts and welcoming further collaboration. "The Pre-Employment Card Program has demonstrably strengthened workforce skills in Indonesia," he concluded.
